War-date Union Autograph Letter Signed, 3pp. octavo, Covington, Tennessee, December 18, 1864, and reads in part: "...We were afraid you were with the Regt. Mother says she hopes that you will never be engaged in another fight. W e have suffered enough by this cruel war. I am afraid that Mother will never recover from this last blow. We received your letter containing the news of Brothers death on Tuesday last which I answered immediately...We have tried our best but can gleam no particulars concerning Brothers death. All we can learn is that Billy Ward saw him fall. Might he not have been stunned? I know you will tell me it is useless to think so that our dear Brother is one numbered with the slain. He left home so full of life and hope. He told us it was only for a year, yes only a year. But scarce three months have lapsed and he is laid in a soldiers grave. God grant that you too may not share the same fate. Do you think we can ever get his body. It would be some consolation to know that he was on loyal ground and not lying in land of rebellion..."
