STARR, Samuel Henry (1832-1891) Enlisted into the Federal service in 1832, brevetted colonel during the Civil War for his conduct during the Gettysburg campaign. The Battle of Fairfield was a cavalry engagement during the Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War. It was fought July 3, 1863, near Fairfield, Pennsylvania, concurrently with the Battle of Gettysburg, although it was not a formal part of that battle. While a minor fight by the small number of troops deployed, strategically, the Confederate victory secured the important Hagerstown Road, which Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia would use on July 5 to return to Maryland and then on to safety in Virginia. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.H. Starr Bvt. Col. U.S.A. Comdg." 2p. octavo, Post of Mount Pleasant, Titus Co. Texas, October 12, 1867, and reads in part: "...I have received a letter...signed by W.K. McKean, H.B. Holman, Jno. G. McKean and James L. Kile,...requesting me to arrest one Joseph Garland, the son of Mrs. Adams, charging him with sundry crimes and misdemeanors. They say that his case was taken up by the Depy. U.S. Marshal Jno. R. Smoot...Please inform me if Garland is a refugee from justice and if his arrest be desirable..." Fine.
