Cabinet Card photograph, chest up, facing slightly left. This important photograph was taken by on January 13, 1861 by Springfield photographer Christopher Smith German. This is the first picture of 51 year old Lincoln with a beard which he began to grow on October 19, 1860. This first portrait of Lincoln with a full beard was made at the request of Ohio sculptor Thomas D. Jones, who had come to Springfield to make a bust of Lincoln from life.
