Newspaper, Frank Leslie's Illustrated, December 7, 1861, complete issue, 16pp., disbound, very minor foxing, VG. An exceptional scarce four-page foldout 32" x 21,"with two images. The top image, "Grand Review By McClellan... in the Presence of the President ...," shows Lincoln and McClellan on horseback reviewing the troops. The top left margin was cut away to accommodate the folding, minor tear has been repaired. The second image shows the Naval strength with 17 tall ships depicted. After the Union defeat on 21 July 1861 at the First Battle of Manassas, Lincoln appointed Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan as commander of the demoralized army. A superb organizer, McClellan rebuilt the army and on 20 November 1861 staged a formal military review between Munson's Hill and Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia. Lincoln and his entire cabinet attended. Occupying nearly 200 acres, some 50,000 troops, including seven divisions-seven regiments of cavalry, ninety regiments of infantry, twenty batteries of artillery, took part in the review, at that time the largest ever held in America.
