This flag is home made, 24" x 19," on beige muslin cloth, finished on three sides with a 2" embroidered light yellow silk border. Within the flag's field, there are two slogans printed on paper and hand stitched to the flag. The first is, 10" x 4," of a Heraldic Eagle clutching a banner with words "Union and Victory." The second is 18" x 8," with words "Cold Water." The flag is then tacked to a 42" staff. In the 1864 campaign, the Republican party used the term "Union and Victory" while the Democratic opposition used the term "Peace, Union and Victory." The temperance term "Cold Water" directly applies to Lincoln. In the 1860 campaign, Lincoln was referred to as "The Cold Water Candidate" as evidenced by the image of the cover shown here (the cover is not being sold in the lot). Clearly this home spun flag was supporting Lincoln in his 1864 campaign. The flag retains its original state.
