Archive consisting of 19 letters, documents and postal covers, nineteenth century, mostly pertaining to one Henry Hubbard of Ashtabula County, Ohio. Three partially printed Ohio militia commissions, each 7 3/4" x 12 3/8", 1828, 1830, 1831, Columbus, Ohio. Signed secretarially by the governor and engraved with patriotic motifs, these certificates name Hubbard as Quarter Master and Aide-de-Camp respectively. All appointments were for positions in the Ninth Division of Ohio militia. Hubbard's highest placement was becoming Aide-de-Camp to Major General Charles E. Paine of the 9th Division. The earliest commission is completely separated into halves; the other two have only minor splits. Garfield, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. Written on the letterhead of the Railway Mail Service Superintendent, this letter concerns mail delivery in areas represented by future president Garfield. VF.
