Book, "Military Commission to Europe in 1855-1856. report of Major Alfred Mordecai," Bowman, Washington, 1860, 232pp, with foldout plates and engravings of cannon. ordinance, maps.. Minor spotting, rebound. This report is the result of two years of travel and study of European artillery and small arms development. Sponsored by the Ordnance Division of the War Department, it exerted a great influence on American weapon design and construction during the Civil War. Major Alfred Mordecai (1804-1887), entered West Point at age 15 and he graduated first in his class in 1823; became an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy; recognized for his meritorious service in the line of. duty during the Mexican War (1845-1847) with his promotion to major; wrote several notable books on the military, which included Second Report of Experiments in Gun Powder (1849) and Ordinance Manual for the Use of Officers of the United States Army, 1841.
