Autograph Letter Signed by Henry D. Martin, 2pp. quarto, House of Reps, February 23, 1853, addressed to Charles F. Fisher, of Salisbury, North Carolina, and reads in part: "...Knowing your anxiety to be advised of the progress of our Choctaw affairs, I lose no time in communicating the result of today's proceedings & in doing so, have the pleasure to inform you that the committee of the whole on the state of the Union have just added the amendment (a form of which I sent you a few days since) prepared by myself to the Indian appropriation Bill, with the single modification of the terms 'reported on' by the Commsrs. to that of 'recommended' by the Comssrs. I presume the change will not affect results. The change made in the law by this amendment in regard to the reception of scrip in payment for any public land, I deem important, or it will greatly increase the market value of the scrip...I took great pains in making the matter understood! by the members of my acquaintance & had a dozen of them committed to debate it if necessary - but Howard of Texas made the move as coming from the Comt. of Ind. Affairs & not one word was said against it. I regard it now as safe..." More. Fine condition. In the 1830s, Charles Fisher, along with several partners, purchased land from Choctaw Indians in Mississippi. The 1830 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek promised recompense to the Choctaw for their lands if they would remove to Oklahoma Indian Territory. However, by the time the Indians made their claims, the government had already sold most of the land to settlers who had displaced the Indians. Charles Fisher took up the Choctaws' cause, trying to help them gain rightful payment for their property.
