Mark Twain and John T. Raymond, with imprint of Gurney. The image apparently represents an attempt at reconciliation between Clemens and Raymond over their dispute about the rewriting of the play "The Gilded Age" [a play that satirizes greed and political corruption in post-Civil War America]. When first written and offered to Raymond, the actor refused to play the part without extensive rewrites. Clemens refused, but the two later reconciled. Image shows the two shaking hands, although their facial expressions give no hint of friendliness. Fine
