HAYWARD, Elijah (1786-1864) was a lawyer in the U.S. State of Ohio who represented his county in the Ohio House of Representatives, sat on the Ohio Supreme Court for a short time, and was Commissioner of the General Land Office. He was a noted genealogist and historian. Autograph Letter Signed by Elijah Hayward, 2pp. quarto, General Land Office, April 29, 1834, addressed future United States President Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) and reads in part: "...I have the honor to return herewith the letter from Samuel Corliss...in answer to his inquiries in relation to the tract of Bounty Land in Arkansas, that has been patented to him...The land in question is not taxable for three years from the date of the Patent..." Good condition.
