JOHNSON, Lyndon Baines (1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President (1963-69), taking Office following Kennedy's assassination and winning a strong return in the 1964 election. A New Deal Democrat from Texas, LBJ served in both the House and Senate. Typed Letter Signed, "L.B.J.," 1p, 7" x 8-¾" Austin, Dec 24, 1969, on his gold embossed Presidential monogrammed letterhead to nationally recognized reporter Merriman Smith. In full, "We just want you to know that your thoughtful Christmas greeting added to our holiday cheer..." Darkly signed, adding in a note in his hand, "Smitty - We love you -." Light mailing fold; else Fine. Merriman Smith (1913-1970) was a wire service reporter, notably serving as White House correspondent for UPI. In 1964, Smith won the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He first used the term grassy knoll regarding the assassination. Smith was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson in 1967.
