CANBY, Edward R. S. (1819-1873). Union general who led the assault on Mobile and received the surrenders of Confederate generals Taylor and Kirby Smith. Killed by Indians under Modoc Captain Jack. War-date Autograph Letter Signed, "Ed. R. S. Canby Brig Genl", 1p. octavo, on War Department lettersheet, January 26, 1863, addressed to General R.B. Mitchell (1823-1882), in most part: "...The Secretary directs you to report whether Charles Beatty Newton of the Anderson Cavalry is at Nashville and if so whether he was implicated in the recent mutiny in that Corps, or if he performed his duty faithfully..." VG. An unfortunate incident occurred in November, 1862, for which the 15th Pennsylvania, Anderson Cavalry, was much criticized. The command had never been fully officered having only seven field and staff, twelve line, and about two-thirds of its complement of non-commissioned officers. It sought in vain to have this deficiency remedied and when it was ordered to advance with Gen. Stanley's division of cavalry on the eve of the Stone's river campaign, only the few officers and about 300 of the men responded. On Dec. 30 about 100 more of the men made their way to the front, and by order of Gen. Mitchell, in command at Nashville, the others were sent to the workhouse. On Jan. 20, 1863, Gen. Rosecrans agreed to have them reorganized and fully officered if they would return to duty. This seems to have been all the men desired and the proposition was accepted.
