Group of four western letters penned by Jefferson Salsig, of Michigan on his journey to California July through December 1863, with covers, they read in part: '...[7/26 Nevada Territory] I thought I would write you a short answer to let you know we are well, me and Wash are here and Derastus he is in California about ninety miles from here...I received yours that I would send you money in the next but it will be about two weeks later that will come about the first of September. I dont want to go to Virginia City to check it till I get through work here for it is 11 miles from here and I have to go there to check it...because I have no settled post office direct your next Virginia City, Nevada Territory...[10/16/63 Auburn, California]I am well at present I have come back to Auburn again. I shall stay about here till spring. I was not able to work up at Virginia [City] and board was high and cold weather was coming on...Derastus has gone to Reese River with Johnsons boys I should have gone with them but my leg was lame...wages will be 6 or 7 dollars per day...I can't do as well here as I could in Nevada but they will have a good deal of bad weather there in the winter...I came here last Monday, the 10th . I came over the mountains with Albert Urvey and his son, they were going to Sacramento for goods to take to Reese river...[11/1/63 Auburn]I had a letter from Derastus he is over to Reese river about 300 miles from here, he is well, he writes good news. Me and Sam are going over in the Spring. Work there for mechanics is scarce through the winter, they have hard winters there but here I can work all winter but cant get big wages...[12/6/1863 Auburn] I would like to return as bad as you want to have me but could not come till spring at any rate...." More on selling a cow and hiring a hand to help with cutting wood etc. All are in fine condition. (8 items)
