A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James M. Brown, Co. E, 9th Virginia Cavalry (courier to Gen. Walker), Gardner Hospital, [Richmond], June 27, 1862, reading, in part: "…the great battle has commenced & so far we have the advantage…[we] have driven them 3 miles from the advanced position but the loss of so many valuable men on our side…is dreadful. The roar of the cannon& Musketry is constant & terrific. It did not cease last night until 2 o'clock & commenced this morning very early. One poor young man died here of pneumonia. A man's sickness & death is as little thought of here…as a pig's…The Surg. is gone to the battle & the assist. Surgeon…is gone off…Doct. Gillium signed a discharge for me with the signatures of Col. [William H. F.] Lee…& sent it to Genl. [JEB] Steuart to sign…twas said he would not sign them till after this battle…in Richmond every thing is scarce & high beyond reason 1.25 for a chicken…$2.00 Gal. for sweet milk etc…". Signed with initials. VG
