Three Autograph Letters Signed variously "W E Curd" and "Curd," in pencil, 4 pages total with docketing on two pages, 8vo, "Jefferston," (West) Virginia, to Captain Isaac Shelby, no location given. They read in part: "(November 27, 1864)…I arrived here yesterday after a very wet & disagreeable trip. I will leave today for Logan C H via Coln Jos harrison's…I shall likely find him in Logan…Mr Kelly Cash of the Bank…thinks there is no chance for me to have a successful trip…(November 30, 1864)…found Harrison at home. He thinks as well as others that Greenbacks can be used much better advantage than Gold…(December 1, 1864)…We did not get off yesterday as I anticipated on a/c of Coln Harrison having got on a big drunk…he is almost sober so I hope to get off in a few moments…I have made contact with a gentleman, who goes with us for 50 heads cattle who is to bring them from Boone & Putnam Countys which is entirely within the Enemys lines…". Browning at edges, else VG and remarkably legible for pencil. The recipient, Captain Isaac Shelby, might very well be the grandson of Kentucky's first governor of the same name.
