Confederate soldier’s letter written and signed by "R M Rucker," one page, large quarto, Atlanta, Georgia, August 12, 1864, to his mother. Private Robert M. Rucker, Co. "A", 2nd Tennessee Infantry, was a seasoned veteran by the time he penned this letter. His initial deployment to Virginia in 1861 was followed by action at Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville and Chickamauga. He served through the Atlanta Campaign as well, writing here a mere three weeks before Sherman's army took the city. The letter reads in part: "…Your letters of June 21st & May 30th I have just recd…You say in your last that you have written me a great many of letters per 'Flag of Truce' but have rec'd no answers…have written a dozen since then….we have become so used and seasoned to expose that we can stand anything. The only thing that annoys us is 'Confed Greybacks' chigers, ticks and dirty clothes…I want something good to eat I go into kind of image for the time to be at home enjoying some good vegetables and fruit from your garden…Wm Betty was wounded in the flesh of the neck, back part but not dangerously in the 22nd…Doc Littleton was wounded also slightly…George Wilkerson was wounded at the same time mortally…all of company C of Fanners Regt. were captured a week afterward…Col. Reuben Butler was wounded but escaped…" Folds and creases, good condition.
