A great Union regimental petition issued by the men of the 14th Iowa Infantry, 4pp. 4to., "Fort Randall, D. T., Feb. 12, 1862", written to the Governor of Iowa, Samuel A. Kirkwood. In part: "…the Gov. of this Territory was exerting himself to raise troops for this post…a Maj with papers…was to accompany them and take command of the Post…we had been expecting the major of our own Regt…to take charge of us…the unanimous conclusion was that it was an outrage to Iowa Troops, after marching near 600 miles…that we [are]…to be denied the privilege of having a commander from our own state…Mr. Wherry the…post master…is universally disliked by our command having…openly avowed secession…we have not received one tenth of the official communications which should have reached us…the post office…has more resembled a gambling & drinking saloon than a post office. There has been secret meetings held there at different time, object unknown...if you should write to us direct to Sgt. Lucious Gun, Co. C…use a common envelope…as not to excite observation…". Signed in protest by seven high ranking members of the 14th. Fort Randall was established in 1856 along the Missouri River, in present day South Dakota, to protect the region's settlers from Indian raids while those living on reservations were protected from white explorers. Named after Colonel Daniel Randall it became a major army supply depot. Fine
