Autograph Letter Signed "Francis Kelly," 5th Wisconsin Vols., 4 pp., 8vo, Camp Griffin (Fairfax County), Virginia, February 17, 1862, to his sister. Kelly was a private in Co. "K", 5th Wisconsin and served the duration of the war. His regiment participated in nearly every major Eastern battle from the Peninsula in 1862 to the final drama at Appomattox. Kelly's letter reads in part: "…there is a good m any deserters from the rebel army comes across our lines. I was on picket last night and their was one come across and he was brought to headquarters. He was a North Carolina Cavalry. He was on picket at Centervill(e) when he made his escape. He was a Scotchman and was pressed into the army. He seems to be very glad that he got away. He was well armed and had a splendid horse. He reports there is 75,000 troops at Centervill(e)…" Written on colored patriotic stationery. Folds and turned corners, else VG.
