A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by "Bert", Winchester, Va., Jan. 12, 1862, reading, in part: "…I am a taking the Yellow jaundice…I got a receipt from one of the boys and went to a drugstore and got some medicine which is beginning to make me feel like myself again…we are provost guards of the town…we have to be on duty every other day…we are the town regulators. We have to patrol the streets every two hours and see if there is no soldiers in private houses & see that no crowds of citizens stand on the corners…I helped arrest two cavalrymen yesterday that was just kicking up the old Jack in a barber shop. They went in to the shop to get shaved and concluded not to pay the bill. The darkies remonstrated a little when they commenced to up set the chairs & tables. We are quartered in a big brick building…it is fun…to see the people come to the provost marshal to get passes. They have to take the oath of allegience to get a pass which they don't like to a bit. The women are our worst cases. They are worst than Devil. Some of them when asked to take the oath think it is something wonderful and ask to hear the oath read…then say…cant do that. Last Saturday there was one hundred and six passes given and this morning there was a crowd at the door ready to be let in…there is a guard at the door to let them in…we have sent sixty prisoners to Camp Chase since we have been here…".
