War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sergeant "Solon"[Rand], Co. G, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, on "U. S. Sanitary Commission stationery, "Milford Station, Va., May 24, 1864:, in part: "…we took our place in line in the Wilderness on the 5th of May & from that time to the resent we have had but little rest night or day. Silas & myself have come out all right thus far & hope to have as good fortune for the future but cannot tell what a day may bring [Silas was WIA a week later at a battle at Hanover Court House]. I had my horse shot in the fight near Spotsylvania Court House. I cannot ride him at present but am in hopes he will be fit for service in a few days as there is no extra horses…and if your horse gets disabled you have to take a foot march. We are having quite a spirited race with the rebels to see which will reach Richmond first…we have the inside track…the water is growing poorer as we go South…we are passing through a fine country. The inhabitants are very wealthy & have very fine plantations…in the 'Wilderness'…thousands of dead lie unburied…still or died a few days since…I am all right thus far in the 'Great Battle'…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
