War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sergeant "Solon A. Rand", Co. G, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, "Patterson Park Hospital, Baltimore, Md., June 30, 1864", in part: "…the wounded men are beginning to suffer severely from the heat; the thermometer going up to 108 in the shade. Some days we have had three funerals…all sermons being preached in one…they cut one man's arm off three times and at last he died in the operation and thus put a stop to the cutting process. My wound is doing well…at this place they had a sort of Secesh doctor in charge…his main endeavor seems to be to misuse the men…I intend to get out of this place…and if I…get wounded again…they will never leave me at Baltimore that's certain. I would take a 'French' furlough…many men swear they will never shoulder a musket again. They say they are not agoing to be shot to pieces and then treated like dogs…the doctors come through the wards so drunk they can scarcely walk…to be kept in a prison very much like the one at Camp Chase, Ohio-where the rebel prisoners are kept. Our living is not half as good as the fare of the prisoners…Baltimore…is just the same as when they fired on the [6th] Mass. men . it is a miserable rebel hole and they cannot whitewash it over even though they…have a convention to nominate Presidents every day. They are a set of hypocrites…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
