War-date Manuscript Letter Signed by Governor E D Morgan of New York, 1pp. quarto, December 29, 1863, addressed to Secretary of War Stanton, and reads in part: “...I have the honor to present to you Col. I. Fred Pierson, late Colonel of the First Regiment N.Y. Volunteers. Col. Pierson has been requested by an influential committee in this City to proceed at once to the Army of the Potomac and to endeavor to induce the men now in the field to re-enlist. I respectfully request that you will direct that the necessary facilities may be given to Colonel Pierson for the accomplishment of his task...” With endorsements on verso by JAMES ALLEN HARDIE(1823-1876) He served on Gen. McClellan's staff during the Peninsular and Maryland campaigns, and on the staff of Gen. Burnside in the battles around Fredericksburg. He was made judge advocate-general on Gen. Hooker's staff when that general succeeded Burnside, and for his services and conduct was made brigadier-general of volunteers....plus; JOHN NEWTON (1822-1895) Union general who appealed to Lincoln to remove Burnside. Led commands at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and directed the 1st Corps at Gettysburg after John Reynolds death....plus; SETH WILLIAMS (1822 - 1866) Union brigadier general active at Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Atlanta. He was also adjutant general of the Army of the Potomac. Fine condition.
