Autograph Letter Signed "Wm. J. Laurence," 6th New York Heavy Artillery, 4 pp., 8vo, Camp of the 6th New York Artillery near Centerville, Virginia, October 18, 1863, to his father. Written in pencil and reading in part: "…the movement of troops and rumbling of wagons and artillery can be seen and heard night and day…if Lee makes a stand at Bull Run, he will no doubt get whipped badly…We broke up our camp near Culpeper soon after dark Saturday…We arrived at Rappahannock Station about noon…Of the fighting that took place in our rear you will learn by the papers…The retreat speaks well for General Mead(e) as all was moving in good order…" William Laurence enlisted in Co. "D" on August 21, 1862 and served his three years, mustering out a Sergeant on June 28, 1865. The letter is clean and has not faded to the extent that many penciled letters have. VG.
