Union soldier’s letter and cover written and signed “Brother,” although believed to be George Spaulding of the 1st NY Cavalry, 2pp., Camp 1st NY Cavalry, Martinsburg, VA, Oct 18,1863. In part, “I must tell you of a scout we went on the other day. In the first place, let me tell you that two Corps has passed through this place to join Gen. Rosecrans army so we have had to keep a good look out for fear that the rebels tare up the rail road to prevent them from going through. There was an Union farmer came in and told us that a scout of rebels was encamped in a piece of woods waiting for night to to tare up the rail and rob the mail train. ... We got within ten rods from them before they seen us and before they could mount their horses we poured a volley into them that killed five and wounded two. There was forty of the rebels and we took all of them but one, he escaped. Among the lot was two Captains and three Lieutentents. ...”
