Three 9th New Hampshire Soldier 's Letters; They read in part: (Paris, KY, September 11, 1862, 4pp.)…I was very sick but made up my mind that it would not do to give up…Our Regt is scattered all about doing guard duty…The 48th PA and 2nd MD and some others that used to belong to our Brigade that have been doing guard duty have got to…take a tramp down into Tenn… (Jackson, MS, July 14, 1863, 4pp.)…we are in front of Jackson fighting after the surrender of Vicks. The army started after Old Johnston which was over across the Big Black and he retreated to Jackson and there we have got to fight him…I expect there will be a hard battle here before we get them. I think they are going to try to surround him and starve them out as they did at Vicks. I do not have to fight for I am on guard over the battle. You will like that for I do…("Milldale near Hane's Bluff, MS, August 3, 1863, 8pp.)…we human beings cannot live together a little while without fighting and killing each other...There was one that died very sudden yesterday…one of my tent mates is sick and do not expect that he will ever be any better…
