Manuscript Document Signed "Orlando H. Swain /1st Sgt Co. D. 84th Ind," one page, quarto, "Near Atlanta Ga," September 8, 1864. Countersigned by a 1st Lieutenant, this deposition describes the circumstances under which Swain lost his weapons and accoutrements. It reads in part: "…The regiment to which my company belongs was directed to advance under the fire of the enemy to take a certain position. In doing so one Non Commissioned officer was severely wounded. The Arms carried by that Non Commissioned officer were left on the field as we were repulsed and they could not be recovered…" Poor Swain had to abandon his Enfield, belt rig, cartridge box, cap pouch, gun sling and bayonet scabbard." The event described took place on September 2nd, the day after Atlanta fell. Fortunately, Sergeant Swain's wounds must have been light enough for him to be concerned about accounting for his lost weaponry. VG.
