The dashing Pegram's untimely battlefield death came a mere three weeks after his highly publicized January, 1865 marriage to Richmond socialite Hetty Cary. Beleaguered Southerners, awash in Victorian sentimentality and the era's reverence for gallantry, made the late John Pegram a martyr for their dissolving cause.
