Surely a rare survivor, this 4-1/2” plug of chewing tobacco was allegedly among the effects of Captain John C. Macomber, 6th Vermont Volunteers, who was killed at the Wilderness on May 5, 1864. Vermont records show a 1st Lieutenant of this name in Co. "C", 6th Vermont who was killed that day. No doubt one in the same person, Macomber was perhaps brevetted captain shortly before his death.
