Bound Volume of 26 weekly issues of “Punch, or the London Chariari,” London, June 2, 1864 through December 24, 1864, 9” x 11,” in gold embossed boards which are tight but show wear at spine, interior pages VG. Punch was widely read in America during the War as England had considerable trade relations with the United States, including a large trade in Southern cotton; the United States was a significant military and economic power; and the moral and economic issue of slavery was important particularly as the British had abolished slavery. There are several important Lincoln and Slavery engavings presented in this volume. Each of the engravings are printed on one side only. We mention several which include; September 24, 1864, "MRS. NORTH AND HER ATTORNEY" pictures Abraham Lincoln as an attorney with law books, documents and a map of the Unites States of America on the wall. The message of the cartoon is that public sentiment was in favor of the Democratic Party platform, “‘‘You see, Mr. Lincoln, we have failed utterly in our course of action. I want peace, and so, if you cannot effect an amicable arrangement I must put the case in other hands.” ... plus, November 5, 1864, "THE AMERICAN BROTHERS' OR, 'HOW WILL THEY GET OUT OF IT?,'" states the names of Lincoln and Davis above their caricatures a few days before the critical 1864 presidential election. ... plus, November 19, 1864, "THE BLACK DRAFT." Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Davis again keep company, the one at the pistol’s point and the other with a rawhide forcing two frightened negroes to drink from bowls labeled “Conscription.” The significance of the South using Blacks in the military is noted in this cartoon. It was not until 1864 that it was seriously considered by Jefferson Davis even though General Robert E. Lee had recommended it earlier. ...plus, December 3, 1864, "THE FEDERAL PHOENIX." Lincoln’s election victory is shown as Abraham Lincoln, as a Phoenix, rising from the ashes fueled by the logs of the United States Constitution, Commerce, Credit, Habeas Corpus, State Rights and a Free Press.
