Lincoln funeral letter, Saratoga, May 6th, 1865, 2pp., fine. A sister writes to her brother regarding Lincoln's funeral in Albany, NY., in part: "George was over the other day he said he and Melissa went down to Albany to see Lincoln they made out to see him and that was all there was such an awful crowd of people there". On April 25 Lincoln's funeral train arrived in Albany in preparation for viewing by the public. Once the coffin was placed in the state capitol rotunda, the doors were opened to the public at the early hour of 1:15 a.m. on April 26. Mourners filed past at a rate of about 60 per minute. They continued through the entire night, past dawn, and until the capitol doors were closed at 1:30 p.m. Even then, the line of mourners hoping to see Lincoln's remains was at least one mile long, disappointing many thousands.
