The verso of this sharp CDV has a 2-cent revenue stamp partially obscuring the backmark of Black & Case Photographic Artists, Boston & Newport, R.I. The sitter, in addition to fathering a beloved Supreme Court justice, was one of the more brilliant intellectual progressives on the American scene during the mid-19th century. A physician by profession, Holmes was also a tireless educator, writer and poet. This CDV has three trivial marks in the fields. Fine condition.
