Small Broadside Designed as a Tombstone, 5” x 7-1/2” 1828. The border of this item has graphics creating a tombstone, within which are the salient words, in part “Sacred To the Memory of JOHN HARRIS, ... Arrested, tried, and by the Orders of General Andrew Jackson, Shot to Death on the 21st of February, 1815 ...An outraged country erects this Monument, July 4, 1828.”On February 21, 1815, a general court order convicted six military men of disobeying orders and were ordered shot. Jackson reviewed the sentences 30 days before the executions and let them stand. The decision came back to haunt him during the 1828 presidential campaign, prompting a series of "Coffin" broadsides which accused him of murder.
