Almanac, “THE AMERICAN ANTI-SLAVERY ALMANAC FOR 1839,” with original pictorial wraps, 4-3/4’ x 7-1/2,” 48pp., string bound, slightly tanned else VG. Although it is loaded with anti-slavery text, the 12 illustrations, each with a corresponding story, are the key to this almanac. As example, pg 7, a slave auction with caption, “The Nation’s Act. Man Auction at the Capital. A Freeman Sold.” Another, pg 11 with wood cut of the destruction of Lovejoy’s press, with caption “A Printing Press demolished at Slavery’s Bidding.” From pag 15, another illustration, “Colored Schools Broken Up in the Free States.” then from pg 19, “A Northern Freeman Enslaved by Northern Hands,” with report of freeman Peter John Lee.
