A good Virginia slave letter, 1p. folio, written by Jane Turner, [Halesford] Franklin, Co. [Va.], Feb. 26, 1848, in part: "…I want you to ascertain the amount due me as guardian…so that I can ascertain how much I shall have to raise to pay Gran Pa for my slaves…how long will it be before you settle B. Wasley's estate so as to allow some one to take the Girl willed to the 3 children…she has been working for 2 months…for a scanty support not so much as a promise of clothing and [she] works hard…it is certainly hard that Alphin's slaves should be worked hard for nothing…it is common for Alphin's to have to pay for all they get…give me a chance to get a home and a good one and pay for the Girl. I could have got[ten] pay [paid for the services of the Girl] all this time but have no power to act…what are you a doing with sister's little concern…". Stampless letter with manuscript "Halesford, Va. March 5th", five-cent postmark. VG
