A complete and authentic issue of Harper’s Weekly, September 12, 1857, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior is a two page spread consisting of 6 engravings surrounded by descriptive text which are excerpted from “Barth’s Travels in North and Central Africa.” Of most interest is an engraving captioned “The Slave Hunt.” The associated text advises us of the slave hunting expedition of Sheik Omar of Nigeria who put in place an army of 20,000. In small part, “It was a sickening sight ... There were a thousand of them - men women and children. Of the men, one hundred and seventy were slaughtered on the spot. ...The raid occupied about three months, and the expedition returned slowly to the capitol with 10,000 cattle and 3000 slaves. ... “
