Union soldier's war-date letter by Musician Oliver T. Davis, 26th Massachusetts Infantry, 4pp., 4to, Ship Island, Mississippi, dated entries from January 20 - January 28, 1862, to "Friend White," n.p., reading, in part, "…We had a bag race four Nigs tied up in a bag and the ground staked out. It was the best three in five and the best Nig got the purse…two Contrabands came to the island form Paeagoula these demanding snuff Boxes….some of our gun boats took the small crafts and sunk them in the Channel to stop the Rebel Steamers from coming down….A Flag of Truce came here with two Ladies and Gents to get two runaway Slaves but the petticoat Truce did not get them as it is not the style of Gen. Phelps to cut up such capers as that…" Small stain on first page, else very good condition.
