A complete and authentic issue of the Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, January 16, 1864, 16pp., occasional marging tears else VG. The strength of this issue is the striking center spread, captioned “The Negro In The War - Sketches Of The Various Employments Of The Colored Men In The United States Armies.” The spread has seven vignettes of colored troops performing various non-combative tasks such as driving cattle, washing, cooking, teamsters, buildimg roads, unloading stores and blacksmithing. In addition there are there vignettes of combat tasks, scouts, in the trenches, and on picket. These ten vignettes surround a larger engraving of USCT in action at the Battle of Milliken’s Bend.
