Full-length 1860s portrait of a lady identified by a penciled inscription on the verso as "Mrs Duhene," blindstamp reading "J. P. Ball / 30 N. 4th St." on lower margin of the mount, no backmark. James Presley Ball was born in 1825 to free parents in Virginia. After an apprenticeship with Boston daguerreotypist John Bailey, Ball traveled extensively and settled in Cincinnati, opening his own studio. He was an active photographer throughout the second half of the 19th century, pursuing a career that was almost the exclusive domain of white men. Slight bumps to two corners, else very good.
