Two newspapers report the same incident nearly one month apart. An authentic issue of Harper’s Weekly, September 14, 1867, 16pp., disbound, missing two inner pages, else VG. From the cover, a 1/2 page engraving, “Whipping a Negro Girl in North Carolina by Unconstructed Johnsonians.” The surrounding article provides the details of this atrocity which resulted in the girl receiving 21 lashes and the attackers being put to hard labor. ...plus, A second newspaper reporting the same incident, The New York Semi Weekly Times, August 23, 1867, 8pp., untrimmed, file hole punch in margin. From the front page, “Caste in The Carolinas, A Colored Girl Flogged by a Crowd of Men - Trial and Sentence of the Perpetrators by Court-martial ...” The article is 2/3 column, very detailed, in part “...the said defendants ...did take one Phillis Ruffin, colored from a schoolhouse to some woods ... Stripped to her waist, except of her chemise, she was then whipped by five of these men in succession, by whom, according to the testimony of one of them, 126 lashes were inflicted upon her half-naked body ...” It really is fascinating that these two newspapers came together.
