An authentic issue of the Frank Lelsie’s Illustrated, May 9, 1868, 14pp., (lacks 2 interior pages), disbound. An incredible front cover, with a 1/2 page engraving, “Midnight gathering of a ‘Red String League,’ in the Forests of North Carolina,” shows toothy, knife wielding Black men dancing around a midnight bon fire. There is a related report on an interior page. The Red String Leagues were organized in response to the Ku Klux Klan.
