Letter written by former slave Samuel J. Lee, one page, 8vo, Charleston, South Carolina, October 18, 1888, to Henry Frampton, also Charleston, reading, "I beg to notify you that you have not settled with me in the matter of the crop of Seahook, and unless you call and make payment at once, I shall be compelled to take legal proceedings against you." Lee went to war with his master in 1861, was twice wounded, was admitted to the bar in 1872 and became South Carolina's Speaker of the House that same year. Stains, very good condition and on early paper with an 1836 watermark.
