A complete and authentic issue of the New York Herald, November 25, 1851, 4pp., disbound, VG. From the back page, “The Treason Trials at Philadelphia. The United States vs. Castner Hanway. First Day.” In small part, “The United States Circuit Court met this morning to commence the trial of the Christiana treason cases. ... do present that Castner Hanway ... wickedly devising .. to prevent the execution of the laws ... entitled ‘An act respecting fugitives from justice and persons escaping from service of their masters ... the number of one hundred persons .. armed and arrayed in the war like manner that is to say with guns, swords and other weapons ... did levy war against the United States...” The report continues for 1-3/4 columns. On September 11, 1851, Christiana was the site of the Battle of Christiana (also called the Christiana riot), in which the local residents defended with firearms a fugitive slave, killing the slaveowner. Southerners demanded the hanging of those responsible, who were accused of treason and making war on the United States, but after the first defendant was acquitted, the government dropped the case.
