Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of the Bath Daily Mirror, Maine, June 2, 1854, 4pp., disbound, cleanly separated at the spine, VG. From an interior page is a dramatic stacked headline, “By Telegraph, To Evening Mirror, Conclusion of the Fugitive Case, He Is Returned to Slavery !, Offer to Sell Hil at $6,200 !!, Military Defences. The Law Sustained !!, Cutter Morris Sailed.” The report is over one column and provides the details of the last day of the Anthony Burns fugitive slave case. In small part, “About quarter before 9 o’clock this morning the fugitive Burns was brought into the courtroom attended by half a dozen men. ... The Court said...When an officer arrests a fugitive, he must identify the person and it is only a ministerial act. A fugitive from law has a greater chance for escape than a fugitive from labor. ... the identity was the only factor which the Court had to consier. The evidence on the on the side of the claimant is that Anthony Burns was in Va. ... This case however affords evidence of identity - Burns saluted his master by his Christian name ... My mind is satisfied ... Boston 2 o’clock, Col. Suttle has given them till 3 o’clock to buy Burns. Price $6,200 dollars. Excitement still great. Soldiers stationed through State Street- loaded muskets half cocked .. Boston, 1/2 past 4 o’clock, The fugitive has departed. Cotter Morris just sailed - no outbreak.” After Burns was transported to Virginia, Suttle sold him for $905 to David McDaniel, a slaver, cotton planter, and horse-dealer from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Leonard A. Grimes eventually managed to ransom Burns's freedom from McDaniel, with financial aid from Boston, for $1,300. Once freed, Burns returned to live in Boston.
