A great future Confederate General's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by LUCIUS JEREMIAH GARTRELL (1821-1891), Washington, [D. C.], Feb. 7, 1860 to future Confederate Quartermaster Daniel N. Speer, in part: "… I thank you for the terms of commendation…you speak of my recent effort in the House of Reps…I am grateful to hear that it met with the approval of my constituents…you have no doubt observed that a black republican Speaker & clerk and a Know-Nothing Sergeant-at-arms and other officers of the House have been elected by a union between the entire Republican Party and a portion of the South Americans. Thus has the south been again betrayed by her own sons. How long must an injured people submit to such base treachery? What will our late fire eating opposition friends in Troup [County] say to this? How long will they remain 'joined to their idols?' I am glad to hear that you will be a delegate to the approaching Democratic Convention in Milledgeville. I trust that body will be governed by wise counsels and take high ground upon the subject of our rights in the territories and repudiate…that odious and dangerous heresy that the territorial legislatures ma[y] exclude slavery. Nothing short of this can save us at Charleston. You are pleased to ask my opinion as to a proper person for Elector for the 4th District. We have many gentlemen…well qualified for the position. If a Southern man should be nominated at Charleston there will scarily be any opposition to him in Geo., and but little canvassing required…". Also, included is the original transmittal cover that is franked: "Free, L. J. GARTRELL, M. C." Gartrell a US Representative from Georgia known for his pro-slavery stance and no compromise policy with men like Henry Clay. He was an outspoken advocate of Secession and can be best termed a "fire eater". He helped organize the 7th Georgia and became its first colonel. Confederate congressman from 1861 though 1864 becoming then a brigadier general being wounded in his first engagement while opposing Sherman's March through the Carolinas. 1877 he was a member of Georgia's Constitutional Convention. Two rare autographs of a short termed Confederate general. Overall VG.
