Georgia officer's letter signed "D. Kirkpatrick, Jr.," one page, 4to, Augusta, Georgia, n.d., pencil inscription on verso reads "Jan 1860," to Governor Joseph E. Brown, likely Milledgeville, Georgia, reading, "In conformity with Special Order No. 22, I have the honor to report that the Washington Artillery have never been supplied with any arms or accoutrements by the State, neither has the Company any in possession belonging to the State. The only arms which the Company has are two brass six pounders, which belong top the City Council of Augusta. The corps is located in the City of Augusta. It was organized 8th April, 1854; incorporated by Act of Legislature approved March 5th, 1856; Capt. Daniel Kirkpatrick, Jr., commissioned 8th April, 1854; 1st Lieutenant J. P. Girardey, commissioned 8th April, 1854; 2d Lieutenant Geo. T. Barnes, 25th Feb. 1857; 3d Lieutenant J. J. Jacobs, 25th Fe. 1857; Number of privates is 41; the number of Honorary Members is 53, and the number of arms necessary to equip the Company is two twelve pound howitzers complete and two six pound guns complete, as stated in the requisition of company now on file in the Executive Office. The Post office address of the commanding officer is 'Capt. Daniel Kirkpatrick, Jr. Augusta, Ga." At some point Captain Kirkpatrick must have abandoned dreams of big guns for he appears during the Civil War on the roster of the 1st Georgia Cavalry as a private. Very good condition.
