A good war-date Virginia Military Institute archive related to Cadet John Liggat Tunstall (1845-1877) class of 1867 who participated in the battle of New Market. Tunstall was born in Lynchburg, Va. to Whitmell P. Tunstall and Mary M. Liggat. He entered VMI in September 1862 and was at New Market in 1864. He graduated Seventh in the Class of 1867. First is a good war-date, 1p. 8vo., "Va. Military Institute, Sept. 2, 1861" written by William Stewart Polk (1827-1917) as secretary of the Institute to John A. Liggat, Lynchburg, Va., in part: "I forward to you by to day's mail our report of 1860, which will give you much information as you desire regarding studies etc., and now enclose an estimate of expenses of a pay cadet with a list of such articles as are required as an outfit. The age of your nephew will not be a barrier, if he is sufficiently grown and strong, and advanced in his studies…please forward application immediately…". ...plus, Second, is a printed circular, 1p. 8vo., entitled: "ESTIMATE ANNUAL EXPENSES OF A CADET AT THE VA. MIL. INSTITUTE", reading, in part: "Tuition…$60.00…Library Fee…2.00…Room, Furniture and Servants…5.00…[total]…$250.00…the estimated average annual cost for uniform and clothing is about $125; but as Cadets vary so much in the wear and tear of their clothing…the Institute does not bind itself that this estimate shall not be exceeded…deposit in advance $200-". More....plus, Third, a printed oblong 12mo., circular showing articles of clothing a cadet is expected to come to the Institute with. Also, included is research material with a CDV copy of Tunstall in VMI uniform. Minor paper loss to two the pieces, else fine.
