A rare Confederate recruiting letter, 4pp. 4to., written by "H. Spangler" who mostly is Lieutenant Joel H. Spangler [POW Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864 & Waynesboro, Va., March 2, 65], Co. G, 36th Virginia Vols., "Bland Co., Va., Sept. 8, 1861, in part: "…about organizing the militia at Crab Orchard…on the last day of August. I went to the mill…here came the Valley Company in double file, Shannon's old hack in front filled with Dillsman's and Drums, but no fife. They halted and said I must go too. I struck the trot for home, dressed up [and] took your fife and trotted back to the mill, took a seat in the hack by the side of Bennett (who was our driver). The flag behind the music, carried by Maxwell. I asked Gus what he would do, he said he did not know well away we went with our band of music. We played from the mill to John Shannon's thence to Sedon and there districted the county, forming eight companies, beginning at the Smyth County line, coming up to Isaac Hudson's forming one company [Co. G], muster at S. I. Patterson's, [Henry] Casper Groseclose [POW Winchester Sept. 19, 64. Died Cancer 1894] Capt…to Grassy branch forming [the] 2nd company, muster at John M. Cassels's, Jacob Harner Capt. 3rd Company Gordon Kegley, Capt., as to the other companies I cannot tell…when we got to Craborchard there was Eli [F. Grossclose] with his drum and Wane Steel [42 year old, Henry Wayne Steel promoted fifer, WIA & POW Winchester Sept. 19, 64], George Dillman [deserted Oct. 1864] and myself took the lead, Eli and Wane next and sam Dillman behind with the bass drum, in looking around there stood poor Gus too. No field officers elected…we took our march…for Shannon's. Eli made Wane quit playing then I went it. [There was] no music in Bland [County] but ours and [it was] said to be the best ever heard. We were dismissed and rested a little and took pie, then mounted the hack and commenced our music and played to my gate…". Also are several family letters including a Sept. 13, 1861 copy letter originally written by Pvt. Joel Repass, Co. G, 36th Virginia on the battle of Carnifax Ferry. Overall VG
