A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., by Pvt. Robert M. Rucker [WIA Chickamauga & POW Goldsboro, N. C.], 2nd Tenn. Vols., "Camp Walker, Va., Sept. 7, 1861" in part: "...went over the Dumfrees [Va.]...we went up on a hill near by, & took a good look at the Potomac which is in sight. Saw nothing but the P---c which was three miles off & Maryland on the opposite side, we did see one Boat or Ferry…what she was & after, were unable to discern...we hear cannons firing every day here a little above & opposite us on the P----c, but only two or three reports a day ...as far as I am able to learn, we are trying to Blockade the P---c [to] prevent their going from Washington down…to Monroe & other Points. We are throwing up Batteries & fortifications as fast as we can...I heard yesterday but I don't vouch for the truth, that we had taken the Chain Bridge Just above Alexandria and 400 prisoners…have heard two or three reports of Cannon firing while writing this just opposite this camp...". Light stains, else VG.
