A rare war-date Confederate broadside mounted to a an antebellum slave owner's ledger book page, printed anti-Lincoln poem, 1p. large folio, boldly entitled: "From the Southern Confederacy. THE DEVIL'S VISIT TO 'OLD ABE.' " composed by Rev. E. P. Birch, of La Grange, Georgia, reading, in very small part: "Written on the occasion of Lincoln's proclamation for prayer and fasting after the battle of Manassas…Old Abe was sitting in his chair of state…he was long in the legs and long in the face…the news had just reached him of rout and defeat…his best men were slain…'I.m afraid,' said Old Abe, 'there's somebody hurt.'…he sprang to his feet…'its the Devil!' thought Abe…it paused just before the 'White House' door…said the fiend with a wink of his eyes…what means Mr. lincoln, this strange proclamation…my wits are puzzled to know what you're about…I invented your platform, and gave it eclat…about 'niggers' and 'freedom,'…if you and your party would only agree to fall down in worship and homage to me…fulfill my commands. Spread carnage and death over all these lands…I gave you my minions from the purlieus of hell…I stirred up the North with its…crew and set witch-burning Yankeedom all in a stew…when…your Grand Army was forced to a fight. They were routed…overwhelmed with confusion, from the plains of Manassas…'what you say to this?'…this war, like yourself, was begotten in sin…". Interestingly, this war-date broadside is mounted to a partly-printed slave ledger page which was originally used to list individual slave owners and their slaves. Divided into nine vertical columns. Each slave owner's name is listed first. Then the number, sex, age and skin color of each slave owned follows. Only a partial list there are four slave owners listed with one master owning 10 slaves while another owner owned over thirty. No doubt, this page was part of a larger county roll book that was most likely used to tax the respective plantation owners. From Confederate Quartermaster Daniel N. Speer personal letter collection indicating that this slave roster is most likely from La Grange, Georgia. A unique piece Southern slave history. Usual wear, folds, else VG.
