Five Confederate officer's war-date letters by Captain Edward Edwards, 14th South Carolina Volunteers, to Mary E. Pearson, Aiken, South Carolina, 14pp, 8vo (3) and 4to (2), 1861 - 1863, in part, as follows: "(Aiken, SC, June 1861)…I am getting on finely with my company…Take great care of your health and improve in weight…Now is the time to improve - hereafter you may not have time or opportunity…(Camp Butler at Polecat, SC, 8/18/61)…they (my friends) think of me running for Maj. Of the regiment and I hope dear to meet you as Maj. Instead of Capt…(Camp Jones near Charleston, 11/6/61)…we expect to leave here any moment for some point on the coast. I don't know where to -I understand there are some 41 Yankee vessels now off Port Royal - if so we will no doubt be ordered down there…we will see some fighting ere long…(Camp in four miles of Richmond, 6/14/62 with soldier's DUE 10 cover)…we are in half mile of the Yankees and in range of their guns…any time they wish they can shell our camp…they go up every day in their balloons and take observations of our whereabouts. They have paid us special attention in that respect today. We are seeing a very tough time indeed. Marching and picket duty all the time…(Camp near Port Royal, Va., 1/25/63)…if I live I am going to marry you…I intend to marry you on my own terms…". A few small splits and stains, overall very good.
